The advanced course on Trauma Operative Procedures includes sessions dedicated to the promotion of guidelines on the management of trauma, which is the first cause of death in the age group 1-44 years. Thus, the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the University of Trieste, Italy, promoted the organization of the TOP advanced course and launched an international cooperation on the issue of trauma, for the training of specialists in surgery, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology and intensive care. National health programmes of the different countries enabled the implementation of emergency plans and the classification of hospitals in two different groups: on one hand those for less seriously ill patients, and on the other highly specialized centres for the treatment of seriously ill patients, with Trauma Centres provided with specialised facilities and equipments. |

CoBaTrICE (Competency Based Training in Intensive Care medicine in Europe) is a collaborative educational research project of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), in partnership with the University of Birmingham (UK), Intensium Oy (Finland), Charles University Hospital of Prague (Czech Republic) and Picker Institute Europe (UK). The project receives the active support of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists), and will involve a number of local and national health authorities, as well as National Societies of Intensive Care Medicine throughout Europe. In addition, the project receives a grant from the European Union under the Leonardo Da Vinci programme, and will run from October 2003 to September 2006. The objective of CoBaTrICE is to create an internationally acceptable competency-based training programme in intensive care medicine, through the use of survey and consensus techniques and electronic media for web-based dissemination and distance-learning. As a matter of fact, an international agreement on the minimum competencies required for a specialist enables common standards of training and free movement across borders, as well as the creation of an open-access electronic educational resource linked to each competence. Thus, an essential part in terms of data acquisition, involvement of stakeholders and dissemination of information is played by CoBaTrICE national coordinators; the national coordinator for Italy is Professor A. Gullo, head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the University of Trieste. |
